Sharing tips from 25 years of successful trading

2017 marks 25 years of continuous trading for The Box Factory.  Like many businesses, we’re so focused on the day job that we rarely step back and reflect on what we’ve achieved. But sponsorsing the Leamington Business Awards has reminded us how important it is to celebrate your successes and mark key milestones as your business grows.

I’ve been asked to share some tips based on our experience of how we’ve grown our business over the last 25 years – that’s a lot of memories to draw on! But here goes…

From humble beginnings back in 1992, The Box Factory has become one of the largest, privately owned, independent, manufacturers of corrugated packaging in the country.  We employ over 70 people and operate from four main manufacturing and warehouse sites in Leamington Spa.  As we have grown, there are some key principles we have stuck to throughout. The first is employing the right people. That may sound obvious – if not always easy – but its importance can’t be overstated. To be successful, we need both fantastic products and fantastic customer service. Recruitment is taken very seriously here – although we do like to find people with a sense of humour that can think inside and outside the box!

We’ve also made carefully-considered multi-million pound investments in manufacturing equipment and IT systems. To respond to our customers’ needs, we have to be able to supply high quality product, in large volumes, to the right destinations throughout the country, on time and in full. That is only possible if you invest in the right equipment and work with advisers who can ensure you have sustainable finance arrangements in place.

Innovation has also been key to our success. Still extremely young at heart, our management team is continuously looking for innovative ways to improve service. Designing and supplying a diverse range of corrugated packing to almost all industry sectors, we’re proud of our creative ability, backed up by many years of industry knowledge and experience.  But that doesn’t mean we rest on our laurels – and there’s nothing we like more than a new challenge.

Underpinning our work has been our commitment to gaining and retaining formal accreditations for Quality Management (ISO 9001), Environmental Management (ISO 14001) Health & Safety Management (OHSAS 18001) and latterly the BRC (British Retail Consortium) global standard for packaging and packaging materials – achieving their highest “AA” rating.  These accreditations give our customers confidence that the products we supply are produced in line with rigorous and recognised industry standards.

Last but by no means least, we firmly believe in the importance of supporting our local community. We regularly raise money for Myton Hospice and we are delighted to be supporting the wider Leamington business community by sponsoring these awards.

Essentially, our recipe for success boils down to a powerful mix of good recruitment, innovation, investment, quality assurance and social responsibility. Whether you’re a micro business or a multinational, many of these aspects will be just as crucial to your future success.

Looking to the next 25 years, exciting times await the Box Factory as we continue to work with existing and new customers alike, developing new products and offering cost effective solutions to a huge variety of needs.

So, if you’ve got a corrugated cardboard challenge, you know where to come!
